Anji Henderson asks: 'I have heard of the vinegar thing, only it was in
repairing the handle... Does anyone know what the vinegar actually does to
the clay??? Is it some sort of reaction?? Or maybe vinegar dries faster????
That question is answered neatly in a book recommended here recently,
"Ceramic Technology for Potters and Sculptors," by Yvonne Hutchinson Cuff,
but darned if I can find the page at the moment. In effect, as I read her,
the vinegar 'roughs up' the clay so it sticks together better. Like velcro.
It's a neat book. Geology fans would like her descriptions of different
kinds of clay and how they form.

I used paper clay to repair cracked handles and it worked better than
vinegar although vinegar is good.
