shimpo splashpans rant

I whole heartedly agree with Vince on this one. I have complained
frequently about this. At the last NCECA I had the opportunity to talk to
the people from Shimpo whilst helping to hold up the bar. After
complaining and pointing out that ALL of the splash pans were useless,
poorly designed and probably the worst part of any Shimpo wheel and last
but not least bad for sales. I was assured by the top man from Japan
himself, that a new replacement pan was in the works . When I asked him
when it would be available there was a lot of mumbling and more mumbling
and then when pushed the word was a year. Personally I think it was all
talk, I don't believe for one moment that one will appear soon. Even if
one does it will no doubt be a piece of rubbish like all the others.
Unfortunately the attitude seemed to be that there really wasn't anything
wrong. I asked whether the person designing the replacement was Japanese
or American and was told that it was a Japanese designer in Japan. I then
pointed out that it seemed to me that this might be the problem right
there, because from what I had seen in Japan the kind of splash pan that we
would like is not in use. I suggested they would do themselves a favour by
either bringing their designer over to see for himself how we use their
wheels or hiring somebody like Brian Giffin to design a splash pan.
Actually I meant to suggest to Giffin that he design and produce one and
sell it as an after sales product for shimpo users. I certainly think he
would be the right man for the job. Perhaps if I see him in Colorado I
will suggest it. Shimpo get your act together.
P.S. As far as I know Shimpo Japan is a multi billion dollar company whose
main product is those little motors that drive our hard drives so I suppose
shimpo splash pans are not very important to them.

I will wade right in on this too. Shimpo wheels are good wheels, but the
splash pans are a pain, not to mention a idiotically designed. Shimpo
should definitely make a removable replacement pan (don't even START
with the "just take the wheel head off and they ARE removable). But maybe
Giffen would do an all-round better job. Might be worth his time.

John, I've never seen the splash pans used in Japan. When the wheel is
set into place, so the wheelhead is even with the surrounding work surface,
it doesn't leave much room for a splash pan. Maybe that is way they don't
care about them.

I only use the splash pan when I trim. My set up is also
level with my surrounding work table.
