Is there any instructive books on the creation and use of Raku tiles for use
in new construction? I use standard raku clay #239 and am considering using
them in a decorative manner in my new home. Any info would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks, Kim Lewis

Hey Kim!
I am NO tile guru, but in 96 I took a great class for free at Home Depot in
SoCA on tile installation that covered float boards, adhesives, grouting,
measuring, the whole nine yards. Wish I'd had it years ago when I did my
kitchen. Nah. Funky was good then.
I'm using Standard 239 now also. It does NOT like to be thinner than 3/8" in
my experience. It warps, and cracks on joints, when thinner. Great stuff for
thick sculptural raku, though. It has a peachy white when ox fired. The
infamous floating blue ^6 does wonderfully on it, smooth as silk. Ron Roy's
durable clear tends to a nice crackle on thin pieces. Thick pieces with two
coats Raku Base (GB 80, Neph sye 20) over Velvets works great at ^06. Mail
me off list for more test results. You could do tiles with it. Gail
Sheffield might help you out, she's a tile person.

Elizabeth Montgomery (I hope that is her name) was featured in an
article in CM within the past year. She is also featured in one of the
tile books. She has done huge commissions in raku tiles. They are beautiful.
