hello, and help w/an large armature

Hello to all on this list,

I hope this question is not too out of place, as it seems most of the
traffic here is devoted to pottery, but maybe there is someone out there
who can give me a pointer or two...

I have lurked for a while now, enjoying and learning, but now I figured
it was time to ask for some help. I am new(ish) to scultpure, and prefer
plastilene to bronze and have done some peices, mostly wildlife, and all
in the size range of 15" or less, so this is what my experience with
armatures is limited to.

Now, however, I am planning a full size wolf, and obviously my 14 guage
aluminum wire will not cut the muster. I was planning on using threaded
metal pipe for the core of the armature and then heavy, aluminum
electrical wire for the limbs and tail, building up on it with spray
foam insulation (the kind that comes in a can) until I finally had a
working surface for my clay...how does this sound? Any advice that could
save me some frustration?

Thanks in Advance,

James ..
Try using syrofoam insulation board, comming in sheets 2" x2' (or 4') x 8'
long.
Can be glued up with industrial spray adhesive from Home Depot, or other
harware store (3M makes a good one) and shaped with hand saws and "trueform
tools" (again from Home Depot, etc.). This will build up not only an
armature, but a more 'full bodied' start on your sculpture. If you wrap it
in crumpled newspaper to allow for shrinkage, it will even fire out, but I
would not want to be breathing the fumes, or causing the resulting polution.

"Oh master, pardon me, if yet in vain
Thou art my master, and I fail to bring
Before men's eyes the image of the thing
My heart is filled with."
