recycling + sales

Hello all.

Just a few thoughts.....

Recycling.....

Although I have not experimented myself with using "raw" metals
to augment pieces, a pottery instructor of mine related to me that
one of his students once put a penny in a pot for a glaze firing
(cone 10 reduction) just to see what would happen. The penny
fluxed all the way through the pot and ended up embedded in the
kiln shelf, very deeply. From what I recall he ended up scrapping
the shelf. If you are going to use metals it would probably be best
to use some type of thin foil or wire with very little mass, so that
things don't get out of hand.

Recycling pt II.......

In the same vane, I have also heard stories of artists using recently
decease organic matter to alter glazes with nice effects, including
fish and other mammals (road-kill). I've also heard that the aroma
can be pretty nice during firing, although the fish gets pretty bad
during the early stages. In any case, don't fisher-people discard
the fish-skeletons when cleaning the fish? I'm sure those skeletons
would make some pretty cool designs in your high-fire glazes, if
you can stand the smell before the kiln gets cooking.

Sales Trends (The tide may be turning).....

I have participated the last couple of years in a local pottery sale
with a few potter friends. In the past my pieces have generally not
sold well, relatively. The pieces that have sold well in the past were
generally blue or green or purple (actually green and purple),
usually glossy, generally smaller, specifically functional. My pieces
tend to be larger, matte, earth-toned, and usually vase type of forms.
Well, yesterday was the day and this year more than 50% of the total
sales were mine. Every dark-green matte piece that I had out there sold.
I even have requests for vases with a simple ash glaze (a nice beige
with many speckles). So, perhaps tastes are changing.
