I would like to have the formula for measuring the cost of firing an electric
kiln. If anyone remembers where they filed the info, please share it.
Thanks.

This is how I do it. I know the cost per kilowatt hour (1000 watts for one
hour), which in my town is 8.5cents. My kiln pulls 6600 watts at max, so
that is 6.6 X 8.5 cents per hour of operation, which is around 56 cents an
hour, if I did the math right, so the electricity for an 8 hour firing is
going to cost $4.48 at most. I say at most, because the kiln is not doing
full tilt all the time. Then I prorate the cost of replacing the cone lever
assembly every fifty or so firings, and prorate another amount for
replacement shelves, cracked posts, etc...get it? Then that is what I call
the cost of firing the kiln. When I do it for my students, I also add in my
labor for loading and unloading. On that basis, it costs about $20-25 to
fire my little Skutt. I'll be interested to hear how some of you other small
scale operations figure this.
