I have tested red and yellow iron oxide in sawdust and pit firings. I
like to have flashing, areas of oxidation and reduction , on the
finished pots. I found that areas painted with red iron oxide alone
tend to stay red/brown/black . Areas painted with yellow iron oxide
flash yellow/orange/red more readily than areas painted with red iron
oxide.
It makes sense that the less saturated yellow iron would be more
'sensitive' to the effects of the firing atmosphere. My question to
chemistry wizards.... Does the extra oxygen (FeO3 v. FeO2) make any
difference in it's reaction in firing and glazes?
