Alisa: the best system in my opinion for production pottery is a pin right
smack dab in the middle of the wheel head and one about 2 inches from the
center. You can then use bats that are about 3 inches in diameter. the pin
that is off center is the one that drives the bat. We use square pieces of
marine plywood for bats.
I think the pin systems that are on the outside of the wheels where
invented by wheel companies in cahouts with the bat companies. Why use 12"
bats for small pots?
We also use bats for mugs. As Harry Davis once said "Why build in
distortion?" unless of course you are one of those zen kinda potters.
Cheers,

I'll just point out that you can use Tony's system without modifying your
wheelhead, if you just make a bat to fit over your conventional pins, then
drill that bat for a center pin and outrider. It raises the wheelhead
slightly, but you soon get used to it.
