I took a workshop from Bruce Winn in Santa Fe this summer. I wasn't
familiar with his work but I did want to spend a week in Santa Fe.
What a great suprise it was. He put on a terrific workshop (though I
wish it had been longer that 5 days) and his work and his techniques
were fabulous. Really unique. I've taken a bunch of workshops in my life
but what he had to offer was really special.
His address is 669 Elmwood Ave., Providence RI 02907: 401-941-8962.

Was the Winn workshop passive, just watching him and
having dialogue, or did you also work on stuff with him?

Mitch, I took a workshop with Bruce in Peters Valley a number of years ago
and He encouraged all to be active and challenged us to pick out and
reproduce a pot from the book, 'Pottery of the World', plus the usual demo's
of his technique.
I did have some concern about his beautiful matte glazes however. I remember
them being heavily barium oriented and wondered about using that type of
glaze in tea pots, and he made a lot of tea pots. Curious to see if he still
is using that glaze.

We made several pieces. I made 4-5. Some people made more than that. He
would do a demo and then have us try the process while he either walked
around to see if we had any problems or he would continue to work on a piece
and we could go over to his table and get more info if we needed it. Since
I've been incorporating some of his techniques in my work, I realize even
further how good his instructions were and being able to do them with him
around really helped.
