a great and simple tan glaze to share

updated tue 9 nov 99

Reg Wearley on sat 6 nov 99

I have used a number of glazes that have been
posted here and would like to share this one.
It is a tan breaking to brown and has a very
unique surface. While adjusting some brown glaze
recipes to get a brown we liked I came up with
this one and really like it. We use it at ^6
oxidation-I suspect it would also be a nice
reduction glaze.

BUCKSKIN: (once you use this one you'll see
why the name has to be 'buckskin')

Albany Slip 50
Colemanite 10
Nephsy 10
Barium Carbonate 20
Rutile 10

We use this on a red clay that fires buff.

Enjoy, --Reg

Sounds like a nice recipe but where can you get Albany Slip? Food safe?
Is there a substitution?

This glaze is probably going to leach Barium and going to craze on most
bodies as well. Here it is with Strontium - I have seen this kind of glaze
(colour from iron) look even better with Strontium.

Albany Slip 53
Colemanite 10.5 (Gerstley Borate)
Nephsy 10
Strontium Carbonate 16
Rutile 10.5
Total 100.0

Diane,
We had this discussion not too long ago. A brave band of potters were going
to travel to Albany to dig some up. Do not know what happened to them....
Maybe they are wandering around the Adirondacks looking for Albany?

But to answer your question, short of mugging a potter who has hoarded some,
there is no way to get hold of new supplies, unless you go digging under the
municipal buildings in Albany, NY... It was found and sold commercially, but
once the area was built on, supplies seemed to have dried up. Not
surprising... Who wants a clay works at the bottom of the garden. (Sorry,
"back yard" :-)

But, Albany slip has always been an "exotic" this side of the Atlantic. I
know it is high in fluxes, so how about sourcing some local clay that is no
good for throwing/making because it "flows"?

Didn't someone suggest Michigan slip as a substitute not long ago?

Glad to see you jump in here Roy-your comments
are always well taken I'm sure. Thanks. We use
this glaze on totally non-functional ware so
for our part I doubt the leaching would be a
factor. Sorry I didn't mention how we used it
and hope everyone else will use it accordingly.
And I'll give your suggestion a try tomorrow.
Thanks again. --Reg

Hi Diane-Someone may correct me but I believe
Alberta Slip is a substitute for Albany. I'm
just not sure-it seems that I ran across that
someplace. By the way, be sure to check out
Ron Roys' comments about this glaze before you
use it. --Reg
