Can anyone tell me about galleries and shops in the 60's...

or... looking back what were the "steals and deals" you should have bought?

Example: Bennett Bean pots for $25
Takaezu pots for $250 ???

To be published in the Niche Magazine 2000 issue..........
Any contributions are very much appreciated!

Thanks

Wendy,
In the very late 60's I bought a charming little
covered jar in "Shaners Red", by Dave Shaner himself.
It was about $8.00.
I was bragging about it when a non-artist, home ec.
teacher over heard me and took me to task, relating
how artists should be paid decent money for their
work.
An important lesson I've never forgotten.

i still regret the tall scheir pot i did not buy. it was around =2450 and =
was
being sold in the hanover shop - league of new hampshire craftsmen. that =
was a
lot of money to me at that time and, also, i was afraid that my kids would =
knock
it over as it was a floor piece. i did buy another scheir pot-a small =
bowl-but
nothing like the tall floor vase. i still regret not buying the BIG POT,

This goes back a little earlier, but how about the Maria pot that I admired
all summer long while working in the gift shop at Bryce Canyon National
Park. I never managed to save the necessary $25. It was 1952 and I was
paid about $2 a day from which my room and board were deducted. Oh my, the
waste, the waste. I've often wondered who finally ended up with it because
certainly none of the employees recognized or knew what it was.

Gerry in Wisconsin, having so far avoided winter and hoping to avoid the
army ofhunters blasting away at the deer who surround me.

Back in 1948 my pottery cohort visited Maria on a trip out west. She
brought back one of her black pots with the feather pattern as a gift
for me. Signed Marie and Santana. She purchased it for $10. I kept it
for many years and about six years ago sold it for $1000. I had my own
shop in northern Michigan where I sold my pottery in the 60's and those
who purchased my work during that time, now consider the work as a
collector's item. We look for my old pots in antique shops and estate
sales in the Michigan/Ohio area.

Still doing production work, pots I may have sold in the 60's for $5.00
are now priced at $40 and $50, new glazes and decorations
notwithstanding. Our first summer of operation we grossed $3,000 and
after a growing clientele the third summer, felt we could quit the
regular job move to Michigan and go for full time.

Bonnie Staffel, of Charlevoix, MI. 51 yrs. a potter now.
