new kid on the block, i.e how to keep the red

Dear new kid on the block--To achieve the lo-fire red, bisk at Cone 04, and
glaze at cone 06. Bisk higher than the glaze temp. The gases from the
lower, and still "cooking" clay is affecting the color in the lo-fire red
glaze. Usually reds like to be together. Any greenware in the kiln will
also interfere with the red.
When high fire clays are used at lo-temp, instead of a lo-fire clay, the
glaze usually crazes/crackles (like in Raku). The glaze shrinks more than the
clay. The piece will seep if used for water for a long time, as in a vase,
or floating flower bowl. This is when some potters have to line their Raku
pots with verathane. (PLASTIC on the clay is to me, icky, yukky, tacky,
un-PC.) Decide on the function or NOT, then the temperature, and get the
appropriate materials. The lo-fire glazes are designed to fit the lo-fire
white clays, without crazing. Recipes are available, or you can get
store-bought.
Good luck! Bonita in San Francisco where tonight the Bay is like glass and
the air is still.(I just turned off the gas fired bisque. I will transport
these pots out of the city to fire in the anagama in Napa. I'm ready to feed
the Dragon next week, and my soul. What a privilege!
