insight software / rock solid potterycrafts glazes!

updated sat 20 nov 99

James Roche on mon 15 nov 99

Well I downloaded this yesterday, and it looks very thorough.
I'm *sloooooooowly* going through the PDF manual, resurrecting
all my old chemistry (I'd forgotten how complicated it all was.)

Not convinced I'll gain a good understanding of how to properly
use the software within 17 days (when it expires) but it looks
very well thought out. I haven't looked at the Foresight
product yet, just concentrating on the Insight PDF manual and
trying the basic examples. (I'm a bit of a plodder.) If I
don't understand something, I can't skip, I just go over it
again until I do.

I've yet to pack my own kiln, or even fire one myself (the
controller manuals are missing)! But I'm damned sure I'm *not*
going to waste years on fruitless glaze explorations.... All
the ones in the pottery have gone rock solid (from
Potterycrafts) and when I think of the countless hours I've
spent remixing them... yarrrrrgh! Someone, somewhere said add
Epsom salts.... but how much I have no idea, they're all just
small containers (500mls) brush on glazes, I guess for hobbyist
market.

I'll let you all know how my first home-made glaze works, or any
conversions I do with the Insight software.

James,
Most kilns you can get another copy of the manuals
from the company... But I shall warn you if you have a
Blue Diamond, as I have write a check and send it...
They sound like a home thing ... maybe it is just a
different kind of company. The TV was loud, and the
woman sounded like I was interrupting her in her
recliner watching game shows, I also felt an aura of
boxes, clothes and junk strewn around the room she was
in... Also, don't want to panic you but it is 15
days..... :

O' Waiting O' waiting for that manuel to come, O'
waiting O' waiting where has it gone????

James,

All those little jars of rock-hard glazes? Do your peace of mind and sanity
(and your wife and kids) a favor. Throw them away. It's cheaper to replace
them with something you know you can use if your time is worth anything.

Yeah, Let's all join the throw-away society..... :( Hey, there's plenty of
landfills out there and if we fill 'em up, well... there's always the ocean.

But, maybe it might be better to take a little time and try the remedy for
rock-hard glaze suggested by some correspondents on this list. I.E: Try
adding some hydrochloric acid.

Anji - Yes, I have a Blue Diamond too. I called for help replacing the
elements and had a funny experience with the same woman. I kept trying
to tell her that I had a different model than the one she was talking
about - she kept hollering "LISTEN TO ME HONEY!"and interrupting me. But
when I finally got her to hear me she gave a pretty good description of
something that's hard to describe over the phone, so I think she knows
her stuff. Does seem really "down home", though, - Like a one-person
business. I'm not too fond of the kiln, either. - Susan

Well, if I was in charge of the budget (+ ordering) I'd have
absolutely no qualms about ditching the lot. Potterycrafts
glazes are crap. All of them go rock solid in no time at all,
and they put them in containers with small screw tops. I know
how to remix glazes well, but, it's just all the effort.

Until I can persuade the powers that be, that we really do need
a good beam balance, thus making up our own glazes, my hands are
a little tied...

Rehydrate rock hard jars of glaze with water and a teaspoon of glycerin in
jars up to a pint. Let the mixture sit for two or three days, then stir.
You can use some kind of tool to poke holes through the glaze to let the
glycerin seep down if you want. It takes very little effort to reclaim the
hard glazes with this mixture if you are willing to just wait.
