Hi,
I am looking to get a digital kiln controller. Does anyone have any
experience with them and what brands are good, etc.
Thanks

Hi Wendy - I use the Orton Autofire. I bought it from Seattle Pottery
the same time I bought my kiln and vent. I love it. I can tell it that
I want to do a glaze firing to cone 05, or whatever, and it will do all
the math, figure out how long to go at whatever temperature.

I'm sure some old diehards on the list view this as unpatriotic to
pottery, but I found it extremely helpful especially when I was first
starting. I was busy trying to learn techniques and wanted to focus on
them instead of the technicalities of the kiln firing process. The kiln
setter also has a feature where you can program in whatever you want.
This is helpful if you want to hold the kiln at a certain temperature.

I give it 2 thumbs up, but it is all I have ever worked with.

Wendy, I have a Bentrup Instrumente TC405 and am very happy with it.
However, whichever make you choose, please remember to calibrate by
testfiring with cones before firing any ware. My controller shows about 100
degrees cooler than it actually is. It may be new technology but not
necessarily infallible. Lynette.

Hi Carla,
Thanks for your input. I haven't contacted SPS yet but plan to do so. Clay
Art in Tacoma carries the Bartlett. They didn't have one in stock so I
couldn't see how it worked and what features it had. I want one that will
"candle" at lot temp to get all the water out and one that will "soak" at the
end of the firing to get crystals. It also needs to be able to cool slowly.
Thanks again
Wendy

Hi Wendy,
I have an Orton AutoFire controller, 50 amp. that got left behind when I
sold the kiln it belonged to. It's a wall/shelf mounted model. I chose it
because, from reading all the posts, it seemed like the best. I used it
about 10 times before I decided the kiln was not the best. I'd love to
sell the controller. It really needs a kiln. <:} I paid $535. Would like
$350. Mary Ann

I'm using the Skutt controller that came with my 1027 kiln. Once you learn
how to properly disperse the load and shelf placement it works great to
fire uniform loads. I'm just adding the envirovent soon. I can program it
and I still use witness cones in case the shutoff occurs before the proper
temp is reached. I see Skutt now makes one with an optional two thermister
sensor control for even firings throughout.
