help with firing

I just finished building a MFT kiln and am firing it for the first time. I
got the burners from Nils and I am having trouble with the burners. The are
natural draft, propane burners. Once the kiln got hot, about cone 06 or so,
they kept going out. I lowered the pressure and it was ok for a while. Then
about cone 5 or so it got even worse and I had to quit. My target was cone
9. I have never used natural draft propane burners before and could use some
help. Tonya

Hi Tonya,
I thought you'd get some more knowledgeable people answering but I haven't seen
anything come through so I'll take a stab. I also have the MFT with Nil's
burners.
My first thought would be freeze-up since it's both burners and well into the
firing. What size tank do you have? I have a 500 gallon tank and haven't had an
problems with freezing. Are you using an oxy-probe? It only took me one firing t
decide that I needed one. I didn't have a probe the first firing and with-out a
clue what I was doing , I was pumping way too much gas in. If you're doing that
it could contribute to freeze-up also. A stick-on thermometer on the chimney(
1/4 inch thick 12inch diameter pipe with fiber sleeves) read 800 F. at the end o
that firing. Made me pretty nervous. Now that I'm firing with much less gas it
tops out consistently at 400 F. So my guess is that you may be using too much
gas and/or your tank is too small.
One other possibility- one of my firings a burner was kicking out because the
thermocouple had gotten bent to the side so it was telling the burner that the
flame was out and then it shut off the gas to that burner.
Now that I know a little bit what I'm doing, the kiln fires easy and
consistently.
Good luck,
Sylvia Mondloch
