Attended another stellar workshop at Barb Kate's studio here in Washington
State last weekend. The facilities, as usual, got rave reviews from the
attendees. Nice group of people and the enthusiasm for clay was so uplifting.
Lana Wilson is a gem. If any of you get a chance to attend one of her
workshops, don't miss it. I am completely not a handbuilder, but I love
seeing someone who is so comfortable with their medium. It seems like clay to
them is just an extension of purpose. They can throw it around and make it
come out great. Lana has a great sense of humor, kept us laughing all the
time. Her knowledge of glazes was phenominal. She pushes the materials and
encourages others to do the same. Stamp making was a lot of fun and I have a
clay slab setting up to leatherhard to "try" to make a box form with a
drawer. Can't wait.
She brought a table full of test tiles and went over the processes used for
producing the various glaze effects. Never enough time for it all, but we
hope to talk her into another weekend session for just glazes. It would
require many small test kilns in order to see the effects. Someone mentioned
checking at used dental supply companies to get small, less expensive test
kilns, like they use for firing porcelain. Nice tip.
Thanks, Barb, for bringing another great potter to our area. Nice one to
finish off the year with.
