Silicone grout sealer made by TILE GUARD does not effect the colors of M.
Blanding.

Has anyone tried either Tung oil [China wood oil] or jade oil? I use the
former on wood sometimes - it's reckoned to give a better seal than Danish
or Teak oil but is expensive and quite thick/viscous. Not sure how thinning
it would affect its properties, or how it would affect colour. The latter
is used to preserve patinated finishes on metal - so presumably slowing
oxidation. Camellia oil has long been used by the Japanese on their
woodworking tools to prevent rusting - extremely thin natural oil, coats
well - so thin you can pick up a steel tool and not realise it's covered
with oil.
I am concerned by this thread - I've recently managed to get some good (i.e.
vibrant) copper matt effects on my clock faces and I don't want them to
measure months elapsed by colour loss as well as the more traditional
methods of telling the time.
I am aware of copper flashing re-oxidising fairly rapidly given the right
conditions - not this.
Question:
What are typical time scales for colour loss from copper matt?
If we can reach a consensus, I will run some tests using above oils. Don't
want to start that without some idea of when/how often to start looking for
changes though.

Still no frosts here! [Pity really - bit of a snow addict given the chance]
PS - anyone tried WD40?

The Molly Blanding recipe I have used is:
Bone ash---------------200 grams
Colemanite-------------500 grams
Frit 3134------------------25 grams
Nepheline Syenite---100 grams
Cobalt Carbonate------12.5 grams
Copper Carbonate----100 grams
This information came to me from PJ Allen, Wildfire Pottery in a message of
Dec. 4, 1996. He also stated:"Increase cobalt for deeper blue, or add a
little manganese to encourage purples. Like most raku glazes, the higher it
is fired, the glossier the surface."
Hope this helps you.
All the best.
