Arlene,

Cobalt is influenced by the composition of your glaze. You might try adding
cobalt--either the oxide or the carbonate (oxide is around twice as strong)
to several of your base glazes and see which you like best. Obviously,
you'll want to start with a glossy base, as you want a shiny glaze. Since
you want a deep color, you probably won't want opacifiers, and as you want a
dark color, start with at least 2% oxide. Depending on your base, you may
end up with 4%, or may get a satisfying color at 2%. I like my blues
earthier, so I always have rutile (around 4% for me). Iron will also soften
the harshness of the pure cobalt.

Hope this is of some help,

Hi Arlene, every time I just add a colorant to a clear base I end up with a
very pretty color but it tends to be some what streaky, why not experiment
with a glaze that is white at the cone you want, remember that cobalt carb.
is very strong and you only need a small amount for a strong blue [one % is a
good starting point] Dave, good luck

Do some test batches of your clear glaze and add different amounts of cobalt
carb. Make 100 gram batches.

Thanks for the info below Dave. You have answered questions that I have
recently been struggling with. I can see how colours could tend to be
streaky with a clear base, and this is not what I want. I am testing now to
get the white that I want, then hope to add whatever I need to get the
colours I want to use.
Yes testing is a pain, but it seems to me that if you don't understand what
you are doing - then how in heck can you understand what you need to do to
get the wished for outcome ?
Ergo the question about frits - thanks all for the info, private and list.
All the replies have something in them that I have now learned.

Dave, et al,

If you're getting streaky colors from adding oxides to a clear base, the
problem may be with sieving. I always sieve several times after mixing my
new glazes. Only way to get the colors mixed in well, IMO.

"The Cobalt Blues" will definitely be on the set list for my performance
at the Potters Council throwing workshop in Mendocino in January.
I will be the "opening act" for the party Saturday night!

Had lunch with Lisa Orr today and she told me it rained buckets in Gruene,
Texas so David Hendley got out his guitar and sang The Cobalt Blues. Lines
that said shino might get you fame but blue will feed the family. Ok, Dawg I
want the words to the song. This song has a place in a book I'm thinkin'
about.
David i can't tell ya how much I loved Lisa Orr. This lady is the real
thing. House numbers ala Mel, kids pottery parties for $100 an hour, lawn
edgings cause somebody wants them, pots for Greune and pots for Garth Clark.
I was mesmerized watching her make pots. Ok the colour pallette was a tad
hard on my eyes, but this lady gives ya permision to love clay.
Said she was going to invite me to Texas for a Mother's Day potters tour
you guys are up to. Not this year but the year after. i said I' give my
left arm to dance with Karen at Old Farmhouse Pottery to the sounds of a
jukebox. Is there enough enough beer in Texas for a good ole boy from
Canada, eh?
A texan in exile-

Today I rceived my dvd of The cobalt Blues by blues axeman David Hendley.
This is a great song with an mean harp. This is brilliant marketing for the
Trinity Clay Company to send out their cataloque on DVD complete with David
singing The Cobalt Blues. The tune is going directly on my ipod so I can dig
David and his words of wisdom.
DAvid I suggest you busker at nccea. The wood fire folks will put quarters
in your guitar case just to stop the cobalt blues.
Well done ole boy. Very clever!
See ya soon. Remember to dress down.
Cheers,
Tony

I ought to try some of those blues and increase my sales just like David
did. It's gonna be hard weanin' myself off turquoise, but I'm gonna try.
