death by firing

Hello,

Following the recent thread about CO poisoning and firing in
enclosed spaces, here's a story for you.
Appoximately 25 years ago a man and his wife finished firing a
wood-burning kiln, bricked up the door, then simultaneously laid down and
died. Their son still lives and works here, so this is not merely a myth.
The cause of death will never be known, as no autopsies were being performed
in those days, and they were quickly cremated.

The kiln was an old-fashioned one, completely underground, with a
steep slope leading down to the firemouth. As all woodburners here, it was
outside, with a grass roof but no walls. I assume that some gas or another
which is heavier than air accumulated in the pit in front of the kiln and
did them in. Quite mysterious, and the only such occurence in anyone's
memory. No proof, of course, that the firing had anything to do with their
deaths, but the circumstantial evidence is certainly compelling.

Happy holidays,
