I have a favorite tool which i purchased from a production potter shutting
down his business. It was used and it is my most loved trim tool. It is a
small teardrop shaped metal rib (the rib itself is about 1.5 inches tall) and
it is welded on the end of a wooden tool handle (kind of like a screw driver
). My instructor tells me it is from Japan. I wonder if anyone knows a
source for such a tool. I have seen a similar tool locally, but the metal
rib section is much thick and therefore not as effective for trimming. Any
source for this tool or any other Japanese style tools would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help, which has always been so helpful!

Christine, You are right this tool is indispensable. It is made by Kemper
Tools and called a turning tool. It comes in at least 3 shapes: two sizes
of tear drop, a triangle, and right and left half tear
drops. Kickwheel Pottery and Southern Pottery Supply list them in their
catalogues. E-mail me at buchanan@c-gate.net if you need an
address or phone number.

That's a very common tool in Europe. You can find them in the wall papering
department. I think they must be a wallpaper scraper. They come in lots of
shapes too. Try a wallpaper supply store on the internet or maybe order some
from Steve Mills at Bath Pottery. I've seen them used in lots of pottery.

One of the better tool suppliers in Japan is the Potters COOP,at
Mashiko. On our last trip we bought a Q of lovely tool steel for forming
our own tools. We also purchased a few stains. Of cpurse the World Trade
Organization may make this impossible,shortly.
