Prior to WW2 there was also an industry called Commercial Art. People =
attended
local city Secondary level) art schools and became Commercial Artists. This
happened as a follow on from primary school after academic selection. They
learned the basic crafts and skill of a trade. When they left school at =
fifteen
or sixteen ( School leaving age was 14) they did the jobs which are now done=
by
CAD people who run programmes like Adobe and Corel, making price tags, =
fliers
and so on or they went into industry where they were needed as technical
draughtsmen. The very best, usually those with parents who had deep pockets =
went
to the major schools, Slade, RCA, Goldsmiths and so forth. I had friends who
took that path. One became designer for Faber and Faber. Another joined the
family decorator business and one joined his father as a fishmonger. One of =
the
girls became a carpet designer and another started an interior design =
business.
Though I wanted to attend the art school in Sheffield, I went where my =
intellect
dictated through passing the scholarship examination, to grammar school.
After 1945 the comprehensive system came in and art was introduced to =
balance
the curriculum
