We are building a new home that will have a studio just for me. The size
will be 23' by 11'6. I have a skutt kiln and a nice wheel. I need
information on the proper way to handle the sink and drain problems. Any
help on setting up a studio will be appreciated. Also, Hi to all the
people at LIL Street in Chicago.

Dear Bonnie,

after our Studio burnt to the ground we had the opportunity to rebuild to
our specs. The best insulation around a kiln is air. Our kioln room is
double height. Water is supplied from the roof and stored either side of the
Studio. One is for outside and has a bit of hose coming off a 200 gallon
tank with a garden tap. I use this for cleaning out plaster buckets and for
washing ash. The other one (also 200 gallons) has a hose coming down through
the building and ending with a tap above a large Belfast sink. Inside the
sink I have a bucket, and I wash my hands into this bucket - gives me great
stinky water (keeps my skin soft), under the sink I have a large butt for
the overspill (this get cleaned out possibly once a year), I do not have a
proper sewer as we are not on the mains, even if we were I would still do
this system as it saves having to make up a clay trap and etc. , it also
makes you more careful about the usage and reusage of water. When it freezes
I don't have running water, but we have a well so no panic.

Happy potting Marek http://www.moley.uk.com

I just taught a four hour class through the Extended Education program at
our community college on setting up a hobbyist's home studio. I asked
CLAYARTists for their advice, which I printed off and copied for the class.
You can probably find these posts in the archives for September or October
(The class was Sept. 30).
Big issues are: managing ventilation and materials toxicity, having shelves,
shelves, and more shelves, and there were some good book recommendations.
The clayart archives have incredible amounts of good info.To get there, go
into clayart via the internet.
