Hello fellow clayarters;
I followed the thread about New Year's Eve Firing with mild interest.
However, during my studio open house some friends stopped by to invite me
to a Millenium Party. Playing coy I said I wasn't sure I could make it
due to to the fact that, according to my clayart buds, I was supposed to
be standing out under the stars firing in the millenium. There followed a
blurring of events, conversation, excitement and the next thing I knew I
DID have plans for New Years. I will be making "Poloroid Pottery
Mementos" for 150 potential guests on New Years Eve.
Yes, I have become the entertainment - which is actually more comfortable
for me than interacting with other attendees. Thank-you, I think, for
this sense of clay comraderie.
This is my plan:
I intend to direct carve the simple image that has been selected -
producing two or three "stamps" , including a couple of word stamps (
such as the year - 2000 ). A crew of 5 will show up next Sunday to make
"cookies" - fist size handfuls of raku clay body , mashed with the stamps
that I have provided (under my watchful eye ) to approximate half inch
thickness . These will be laid out on my bread rack trays and be left to
dry over Christmas. I bisque, provide watered down underglazes, they
provide old tooth brushes and pieces of sponge....all to be used at a
later date at the party.
We will set up my fiber raku kiln in their spacious yard. Those guests
who choose could sprinkle a little underglaze "stain" on a "cookie"
before the preheat. My thought is to bring the pieces up to about 1200
degees F to augment "Poloroid Smoke Firing ". Tonging them into small
sand pits seemed a way to minimize the smoke so as not to have a nervous
neighbor ( though they are 2 acre lots) invite the fire department to our
party.
I have suggested a sand pile, where a scoop could be made, a handful of
paper, sawdust, straw could be tossed in , the "cookies" tonged into the
holes and quickly covered with a collection of small coffee type cans or
pans which they are collecting and which I also have a couple of dozen.
This poloroid approach to smoke fired memento cookies is something that I
HOPE will work. If not....who's a fool? I'm a fool!...as my budgie used
to say.
One question I have been asked by other clay-friends I will answer here.
No. I am not being paid. I know these people , though we are not fast
friends, and the guest list is one I will gain some excellent exposure
from. I am somewhat of a recluse in my own community and this is a good
way to make a change for the millenium.
Since, to a small degree, I feel you guys helped get me into this. I am
asking you to review my project and give me any feedback ( friendly )
that you might have.
Thanks
Sandy Tesar

Hi Sandy,
Just read your posting and this has given me a good idea for a similar
party (much smaller scale) . We have horse and I have been following the
thread on horse hair firing. Think I will try a bed of sawdust , small
cookies like yours or small shallow dishes that I can throw and then stamp
with 2000 . these can be placed in the saw dust bed and sprinkled with the
horse hair. I like the idea of an underglaze wash too. Could be
interesting and a lot of fun even if the pots don't turn out great.
thanks for the idea=21
