salt firing laguna b-mix ^10--need info---

updated fri 17 dec 99

Has anyone salt fired Laguna B-mix to ^10? I've contacted Laguna and
they
do not have any information about B-mix and salt.
I'd like to know what the surface is like. Does it stay white or
off-white?
Does it get toasty or flash?

I had one Bmix test piece in a light salt firing and it was pretty pasty and
boring. It was a dull, flat, light cream color - no flashing.
Someone else told me that it wasn't good in salt, but I had a lot of clay
orphans on the shelves that I wanted to clear out in that firing.

Hi: Cathi Jefferson from North Vancouver, B.C. fires B-Mix in salt all
the time, and has done for a number of years. You can see pictures of
some of her work in the book "The Best of Pottery", page 109, and 131.

I fired a couple of B-mix ^10 in a salt firing. It tends to stay really
cold white. There was a bit of carbon trapping on one side to give a nice
grey color, and a 1/2 dollar size of orange flashing around where it was
resting on the wadding. Otherwise, it was pretty lifeless. My take on
B-mix is that it's good for glaze color development - sort of as a canvas,
but that flashing and natural effects generally pass it by.

I had the pleasure of salt-firing B-mix in Craig Martell's kiln in
October, The surface took the salt well, was a heavily reduced grey in
some areas, and a lighter toasty brown in other areas. I did some
brushwork on the bare clay surface with a 50/50 mix of rutile and red
iron, and got a lovely gold.

we've had 8.17 inches of precip. so far in Dec.

In my opinion, B-mix is only good in salt with heavy slip over top,

I coat the exterior, and use a gear as it is rotating to make uniform
"footprints"(gearprints) where the tooth of the gear touches and removes the sli
is a nice contrast to the effect of the various slips I use.
