Several weeks ago, I asked for suggestions on making a cone 4 oxidation
cadmium red glaze have some visual texture to it, as opposed to just a
flat, hard color. I got several suggestions, the most popular one being
to add some titanium.
Well, I did and the tests came out this morning. Here's what happened:
With 2% added TiO2, a few yellowish specks.
With 4% added TiO2, lots of yellow specks.
With 6% added TiO2, an all-over pink with no specks.
Some day I'm going to figure this glaze thing out, I just know I am!
I just wish I hadn't run out of red stain before I got to try Craig
Martell's suggestion of using flourspar as a source of some of the
calcium in the Hansen's 5x20 base I am using. I'll keep you posted.
Paul Lewing, hoping another backsplash commission will come in soon, so
I can test more glazes!
