help with brent wheel

My friend, Alan, has just put a new motor in his Brent wheel and is
having problems. Can you give him some suggestions? He has a Brent CXC
with 1 hp motor. He put in a new Amaco/
Brent motor. When he tightens the belt, it clicks. When he loosens the
belt, it stops the click but the wheel slips and won't turn with just a
little pressure. Will the click hurt anything? He is afraid that he
will burn up his new motor.
He would appreciate any help you can give him. Thanks, Juliet

I am an authorized Brent repair representative, and I suggest the following.
1) Disconnect the belt drive and check the wheel head and make sure the wheel
head bearing is not frozen or not turning freely. If it does not turn freely
the bearing is frozen and is in need of replacement.
2) Check to see what is causing the clicking, it is probably the belt it self
is defective and it is clicking where the to ends meet.
3) Check to see that the motor is at a right angle to the table top. Level
the wheel and then check the motor for plumb. If the motor is at an angle it
will bind and wear out the belt.

>From your e-mail it sounds like the motor is running OK, so it is a process
of elimination to discover the ailment. Good luck, call me if that does not
work for you at my clay studio.

Happy Holiday to all you clayarters, keep spinning.
