Friends,
John Rogers asks about skipping the bisque and single firing raku. Can it be
done? Of course it can be done. In fact, most anything can be done including
firing wet pots. I have single fired VERY small objects successfully when
they were made at workshops and the participant REALLY wanted to try to fire
them. The question is why even try? Raku is a relatively quick firing method
whose success is at least partially due to a refractory clay that is shock
resistant that can be fired and cooled quickly. In order to single fire raku,
the firing would have to be sooooooooo slow and careful that you would in
effect be doing a bisque and a glaze fire together. What are you trying to
accomplish? Perhaps there are some creative effects that could be achieved by
single firing but I doubt it and I certainly don't think it would be worth
the effort and frustration involved! If anyone out there has done this with
positive results please let me know. I'll put it in my next book!
