The first TEXAS CLAY ART ASSOCIATION meeting of the new year will be at NORTH
HARRIS COMMUNITY COLLEGE. The meeting will be on Tuesday evening, Jan. 18 at
7pm. North Harris Community College is located in north Houston, between
I-45 north & the Sam Houston Tollroad north - the address is 2700 W.W. Thorne
Road. The phone in the ceramics lab is 281-618-5609.

We plan to unload the kiln from the Steven Hill workshop ( held there the
week before) and discuss plans for the new year ( did you enjoy the Ron
Meyers workshop? how was the Attachments show in Austin? and NCECA which
is coming up in March ... where would YOU like for us to have a meeting?...
etc)

If you want more information about the meeting or TCAA in Houston, please
call or email me. My husband & I moved in November for the first time in 12
years, so if you have had trouble finding me ... the email address is still
the same & the new phone number is 713-880-8157.

Please come & bring a mud-buddy.

for March 28th ( another Tuesday evening ) at GOLDSBERRY GALLERY, 2625
Colquitt, Houston, TX 77098 - the phone there is 713-528-0405. This should
work well for people as it is central Houston, known as the Upper Kirby

The Houston area TEXAS CLAY ARTS ASSOCIATION met this week and our guest
speaker was ARCH CARSON, MD, Ph.D., from the University of Texas Health
Science Center at Houston. Dr. Carson is the Director of the Occupational
Medicine Residency program. His list of accomplishments is quite long. We
were very fortunate to have him come talk to us Tuesday night at GOLDESBERRY
GALLERY.

Dr. Carson spoke on a long list of health risk potter's are exposed to in
their work. He discussed chemical exposures and the risk of inhalants, skin
exposure and neuro toxicity. Dr. Carson discussed exposure to chemicals
released in the firing process and the dangers to the eyes when we monitor
flames. Dr. Carson also talked about the how important it is to communicate
to our physicians exactly which chemicals we work with and the value of blood
test and Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) to monitor our exposure.

I am not capable of going into details regarding his lecture and the answers
he gave to questions, but I will tell you that he is a very well informed
physician, and was very kind in responding to our concerns. Dr. Carson can
be reached at 713-500-9465. His address is:

SOUTHWEST CENTER FOR OCCUPATIONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SCHOOL OF
PUBLIC HEALTH, SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
1200 Herman Pressler St., Suite 1004
Houston, TEXAS 77030

I would also add that the next TCAA Houston meeting will be Saturday, June 24
at POTTER'S PLACE in Sugar Land (just SW of Houston) - phone 281-313-3223.
This will be our annual workshop meeting and our guest artist will be MATT
WILT of Sam Houston State University. Matt will demonstrate his technique of
assembling thrown and molded pieces and show slides of his work.
Registration for the workshop is limited - call Potter's Place for details.

The last thing I want to mention is that we are planning ATTACHMENTS 2001 for
the spring here in Houston. Janis Ross has volunteered to head up this event
and we are fortunate to have her take on such a big project. Janis is going
to need help for this to be a success. Please feel free to contact her with
your ideas and suggestions & let her know that she can count on you. We are
hoping that we can use the lovely gallery space at HCC Downtown and are
working to secure dates at that facility.

If you are interested in joining TCAA, please see our web-site at
www.texasclay.org or call me (Vicki Katz) at 713-880-8157 or the Austin
central connections: President - Stephanie Thomas at 512-371-7599 or VP -
John Vela at 512-371-1364.

Please note that there is a mistake in the TCAA newsletter regarding a
meeting this month at Goldsberry Art Gallery - that meeting was in March.

Also, please send in your registration for the MATT WILT workshop on
Saturday, June 24. That will be our summer meeting. It will be an all day
workshop. Matt will do a slide presentation. Lots of people have signed up
already & space is limited. Please call Potter's Place at 281-313-3223 to
register.

If you want more information about the workshop or Texas Clay Arts Assoc.
feel free to call Vicki Katz at 713-880-8157.
