kiln shelf & furniture question?????

updated fri 7 jan 00

Just thinking again.... There have been some posts a
bit back about kiln shelves melting... And now the new
one for Skutt's that says "Only fired to cone 06"..

I bought my kiln from someone who did the painting
bisque stuff, and was wondering if it is possible that
shelves & Furniture have temperature ratings too???
Could they have bought shelves for the lower
temperature that they will be firing to and if I take
it up to cone 6 I could mess them up?? Or is that just
a silly thought I cooked up??

Shelves and furniture are rated, too, yes. Make sure that
yours are rated for the temp you want to fire, or you will
have unpleasant surprises awaiting you.

Anji,
I don't know about your shelves, but you might want to check
your kiln posts. At cone 6, they probably should be okay, but try
firing them when they're not supporting any shelves. We got some free
posts from a "ceramic store" (Molded bisque) and they fire fine to Cone
6, but they warped something fierce at cone 10. What a terrifying
sight, firing the kiln, filled with student work, then, on opening day,
the door creaks open to show the shelves tilted every which way.
Luckily, none of the work was ruined and none off the shelves slipped
and fell. Some of the posts were amazingly warped. If you have
enough posts that you are sure of, I'd advise that you fire the posts in
your next firing without actually supporting the shelves with them. It
won't take much effort and should't take up that much space in the kiln.
They're probably fine at cone 6, but why take chances if you don't have
to.

Anji,
Yes,kiln furniture,which includes shelves,is temperature rated.I have
never heard of furniture rated as low as cone 06 and once again I think the
"0" is a mistake but you should check with either the manufacturer or your
supplier for this information. Cone 6 is not very high and I think all
furniture will withstand this temperature but over a period of constant
heating and cooling there is certain to be a bit of warping.

This may not work, Doug, one of the key factors in the warpage will be the
combination of heat and load. With no load on them they may stand just fine.
A better test may be to take a longer one and fire it horizontally with the
both end on say a 1 or 2 inch support so that the middle is unsupported.
