I have never understood why Gerstly Borate is so pervasive in the vocabulary=
of
stoneware glaze recipes if they are correctly formulated. Just two =
questions.
1 Should it be a necessary component at such a high temperature?
2 What functions does it fulfil?
As far as I can judge, the main purpose of adding this compound is to =
provide a
low melting point material which, when fluid, acts as a solvent for all =
those
refractory materials, dolomite, whiting, magnesite, talc and so on. Or does =
it
initiate fluid phase sintering? I know it does wonders for cone eight glazes
which are reluctant to fuse and smooth out.
To replace it. First thought=3B use any good high boron frit.
Irreplaceable. Watch the price rise.
