Just had the opportunity to spend a few hours in a workshop with Michael
Sherrill at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. I wish it had been days
instead of merely a few hours! He shared his insights about turning away
from functional work toward sculpture, some of his methods of using
extruded pieces along with thrown pieces to create parts for his
assemblages and his imaginative use of tools and shaped ribs. According
to Michael, some of them are going to be produced for sale shortly. He
said he frequently teaches at Penland and someday I'd love the
opportunity to take a longer workshop with him.
Contrary to popular opinion, he uses VERY stiff clay in his extruder, a 4
1/2" North Star. Says it makes the extrusions easier to shape and
handle. One of the forms he uses is a simple hollow cylinder which he
extrudes and while still attached starts to shape as if he were pulling a
handle. These forms were used in his assemblages but could also be used
as teapot spouts or handles.
If anyone ever has the opportunity to take a workshop, I'd highly
recommend it.

Sounds wonderful. Wish I could have done the workshop but am taking a
2-day with Hayne Bayless at OCCC in a couple of weeks, and with my
sculpture class there's not much left in the pottery account. I'll let
you know how the Bayless wkshop goes. Mimi
