my search for gerstley borate

updated wed 26 jan 00

Carolynn Palmer on wed 19 jan 00

Having decided to buy up enough Gerstley Borate to last me the rest of my
life (I figure 500 lbs would do it) I set out to purchase the specific GB
that I have on hand and behaves so wonderfully in my glazes.

I contacted the company on the bag, AE Corporation, who it turns out only
grinds minerals. They sent me to Hammil & Gillespe who sell them. My bag
came from their Batch #8202.

Hammil & Gillespe sold Gerstley Borate, Batch #8202 during the latter part of
1998 and early 1999 to ceramic supply companies, etc.

I am looking for 1 to 10 bags of Batch #8202 Gerstley Borate. The bags say
8202 in a stencil on the end and AE Corporation on the front or back.

Please contact me off-list if you have this particular batch for sale or know
of a supplier who might have bought it during this time period.

Thank you, Carolynn Palmer, Somerset Center, Michigan

Carolynn et al,
With the word out about GB and the fact that nearly all my glazes contain
GB, I decided to stock up as well. I must be older as I figured 100#
would suffice. I was surprised to learn today that Clayart in Tacoma
raised their price 50% since my inquiry 2 weeks ago when I was informed
that no acute shortage existed because their supplier (Laguna) had
purchased 200 tons. As justification for the price increase, I was told
that this was a "routine" price adjustment. A 50% increase over the
listed price in their "2000" catalog?!! Is this good business or price
gouging? Will GB suffer the fate of Albany slip? Available but at what
price? $5/lb? $50/lb?
dave in Olympia, feeling like a sheep being led to slaughter and
considering taking my business elsewhere.

Hi Dave,

US Pigment has Gerstley Borate for 65 cents a pound if you purchase it in
50# bags.
They'll ship it UPS. They say it's going fast. Call them at 800-472-9500.

David, I just bought some Gerstley Borate from NM Clay in ABQ and paid
$3.92 for l0lbs which I consider not unreasonable. For a larger quantity it
might even be cheaper per pound. Mia in ABQ

Mia, The Gerstley Borate you refer to below, did it say "Gerstley Borate"
or "Gerstley Borate, Colmomite" on the bag? I called the same supplier and
asked for Gerstley Borate this past week. The said they had it in stock.
The next day, I had it picked up and brought back down to Roswell. Much to
my surprise the bags were labeled, "Gerstley Borate, Culminate? I have
purchased from them for a number of years and the G.B. was was always just
labeled "Gerstley Borate". When I called them about it, they told me it was
the same thing, the person labeling the bags was new and made a mistake.
Don't know what to believe now. Any comments, anybody?

Dear Lori,

Colmomite is obviously a mispelling of Colemanite which is a naturally
occuring calcium borate. I think of GB as Colemanite and label my jar
accordingly. They obviously used both terms for GB. I have no doubt that it
is Gerstley Borate that you received. Their supplier is Laguna. So until
October there should not be any shortage.
I tossed the bag it came in, but have no doubt that it is what I ordered.

Lori--
Don't know if it helps -- but our bags are marked Gerstley Borate
and the bin ( marked long ago ) says Gerstley Borate / Colemenite . I have
always assumed that this was referring to the changeover to GB from
Colemenite ( happened when --in the 70's ? ) letting people know that they
were interchangeable in a recipe . Chances are this is just a misspelling .
