stay-at-home mug exchange

updated mon 6 feb 12

Chris Schafale on wed 19 jan 00

Just an update for those who may have missed the original
message, or who are now realizing that they are not going to
NCECA after all.

The mug exchange for us stay-at-homes is ON! I've got around 70
names already, and more every day. Details:

1. Send me your name and *mailing* (you know, like the post
office?) address (my email is: candle@intrex.net)

2. Make your mug (or teabowl or small vessel or candleholder or
whatever.....) and be ready to mail it on or about March 21, when
NCECA starts.

Please, please, please don't sign up to participate unless you can
have a mug ready to mail *in March*, not in May, not after
graduation, or after you build your kiln or ......

3. On March 19, I'll collect all the names and make the matches,
then send you an email with the name of the person to whom you
will send your mug. For simplicity's sake, this year let's make
it that the person you send a mug to will also be the person you
receive a mug from. That is, person A will send a mug *to*
person B, and will receive a mug *from* person B.

4. Non-US residents are welcome to participate if you're willing
to ship your mug here. If you have a problem with paying postage
to an overseas exchanger, please let me know when you sign up,
and I won't pair you with an international partner.

Any questions, email me directly at candle@intrex.net.

Had no problem with exchanging mugs. When I received the name of my mug
partner, I immediately e-mailed her to make contact before sending the mug
out. She then wrote me and we then moved ahead with plans for shipping.
We both notified each other when the mugs had been shipped and we were
happy recipients within a couple of weeks.

To all who so kindly wrote and offered to exchange mugs with me, let me
first say thank you. Your grace and generosity have touched me deeply.

I would be happy to exchange mugs with any or all of you, though, at the
moment, I have neither mugs nor any place or way to make mugs. Or anything
else. If you all want the promise of a mug in the coming eight or 12 months
(just a dash of realism on my part), then send away. Otherwise, please know
that I appreciate your gestures and kind thoughts.

Well, lo and behold, guess what arrived in the mail yesterday? Not just a
mug from my exchange partner, but a truly beautifully made, gorgeously
decorated, elegant blue and green mug. Puts mine to shame.

So my woe-is-me-ing, well, I won't say it was for naught -- maybe it spurred
a few folks to get those mugs in the mail... and it certainly showed (again)
me the warmth and generosity people on this list can have.

I am inspired by all that, and by this beautiful piece of pottery that now
holds my coffee. So, time to deal with the stubborn pig in the barn and get
working!

Best,

I'm not going to NCECA this year, so will volunteer to organize the
Stay-at-Homes again, if no one else is longing to do so. Andie? Are you
still out there? Anyone else? I don't want to hog all the fun! Will post
details from my home computer tonight or this weekend if I don't hear from
another volunteer.

OK, folks. All those who asked to participate in the stay-at-home
mug exchange and sent me their addresses have been matched
with partners, and all have been notified (some messages sent out
as late as 7 pm this evening). So you are now officially allowed to
complain if you haven't received your partner's name.

If you think you were on the list but have not received your partner's
name, or if you find that I screwed up in some other way (not
unlikely, since I did some of the messages before 5 AM this
morning) please let me know. Some of you have more than one
email address -- you may need to let me know which is correct.

I will be leaving NC to drive to NH tomorrow (Friday) afternoon, and
will not be within reach of email until at least Saturday evening, but
will be checking after that. You can send messages to my regular
home email address: candle@intrex.net, and I should be able to
access them from NH. I will NOT be able to get to my work email
(christenas@rfsnc.org).

If you have complaints about your partner, please deal with it
yourselves as much as possible.

Hope everyone gets a mug very soon, and that it's lots of fun for all.

I want to thank Chris for her work in arranging this year's stay-at-home =
mug exchange. I also want to thank Mel for giving us Clayart.

It would be nice to hear about some of the mugs fellow claybuds =
received. I received a very beautiful, large mug done in blue and =
silvery white with a black bear sprigged onto it. Made by Lee Bedford. =
It looks great and feels so nice to hold. I've heard people talk about =
"waxy" glazes, but never knew what they meant until my husband and I =
felt this mug. It truly feels as if it had a coat of wax on it although =
I know it does not. Makes me want to hold and fondle it for hours. So =
nice. This treasure now has a home on my fireplace mantle along with =
some work from other claybuds.

The mug exchange is such fun and the time of year is perfect. March for =
me means the Winter blahs, waiting for Spring, fed up with cold weather. =
What a delightful way to enter into Spring.

I echo Marianne Lombardo's comments about the mug exchange.

I got my mug from Paul Herman (Great Basin Pottery, Doyle, CA) and it not
beautiful , it is absolutely gorgeous.

Paul's mug is well made and finished and glazed in two shino's in a
wood-fired kiln. The inside is a golden shino and the outside is a
beautiful oatmeal color shino. The mug is generous in size and it has a
great 3-finger handle. Unlike Mariannes, my mug from Paul went into
immediate use and and will continue to be used.

Thanks to Chris for all the work of getting us all together. Wish the
American buck was not so expensive so we could go to NCECA but not likely
for a while yet. The stay-at -home -exchange is a great substitute.

I saw a note about the stay-at-home mug exchange a while back but
apparently didn't keep the email with the info. Is it too late to sign up?

Thanks!
