stay at home mug exchange

updated mon 7 dec 09

Chris Schafale on thu 20 jan 00

Just a reminder. Our moderator has been very gracefully catching
mug exchange replies that were sent to the list instead of to me
directly, but to minimize the work we're putting him to, please do
reply to me directly at candle@intrex.net if you want to be part of
the exchange.

For those who did send replies to the list, never fear, I did get
them, and do have you on my list of exchangers. I will post all the
names shortly before the exchange to give people a chance to
check whether they are there, or to back out if their circumstances
have changed.

For two years now, I've sent mugs off to the stay-at-home mug exchange, and
have received nothing in return. This makes me feel bad.

I was very late this year, sending mine off, as we moved in the midde of it.
But I got the person's name, kept a mug out of the regular moving materials,
and sent it away. OK, it was not the greatest mug in the world, as I am not
(yet) the world's greatest potter, but it was my work, and it was from the
heart.

It is possible that my exchanger is just late, but I was already so, so
late, it seems likely that once again, I have participated in a one-sided
exhange.

If people don't want to make the exchange, they should not sign up for it.
Has anyone else sent mugs off for two years and not received a mug in
return?

Do'nt feel alone. I sent mine off right away and could'nt even get
the party to acknowledge that they received it.

That stinks - this was my first year, and I had a great time with it - I
even signed up for two partners! I was so blessed to be paired with Audrey
Skeen, who creates unbelievably wonderful pieces, in a style and using
techniques completely different from mine - it was a great chance for me to
hold something in my hands that was produced by someone more experienced
than I, and to learn from it (not to mention enjoy it!)

I will be doing several big firings at the end of this month, and would like
to offer to send you a mug (or a vase, or flower pot, or miniature, whatever
tickles your fancy, see webpage below) then. Please feel free to write to me
off list to give me your address. You deserve the same wonderful experience
the rest of us had.

opinion!!! I expect it is long enough for the bank to
not cash the check, but I don't care my word is at
stake.... I said I was sending it today.... Moron

tomarrow or my name is eternaly MUD to me... and Mug
exchange???... The picture is on the page... Ummmm the
mug is in a box in my car ready to go with Joyces
plate.. And tea bowl's too... and more are coming...
Moron again.. : ) Did I know there was going to be
such a turn out?? NO!!! Well I am glazing more for the

Maybe it is a ooops on the non senders part.. maybe it

Hi Carrie,

I received wonderful pieces from Andie so I would jump at the chance to get
one of her pots. Her miniature pot necklaces are great and my bulb forcer
is in the refrigerator waiting to produce a beautiful flower! Thanks Andie
for the kind comments about my work.

Carrie, I will also send you a pot if you send me your address. With Andie
and I that will make up for the two years you didn't receive one.

Don't give up hope for next year!

Best Wishes,
Audrey

Hello All, I'm new to the list , but something as simple as a mug
exchange should not be that difficult . I also belong to a Basketry guild
and Pine Needle Basket Guild, both of whom hold several exchanges
throughout the year. Never once did I not receive and exchange. The
person in charge of that particular exchange would post toward the end of
the time period given, all the names entered, then who has sent/received
and photos are encouraged and posted on the main site.
Admittedly, I am a novice potter and I have visited many beautiful
potters sites, surely a mug would be no problem. While I'm up here on my
little soapbox I will also say that in the short time I have subscribed
to the list, I have reaped a harvest of knowledge from all of you. Thank
you for sharing....................Nora Voss in the Colorado Mts.

Time for one more repetition. If you are interested in being a part of
the 4th annual Stay at Home "Mug" Exchange, for those of us who
will not be going to NCECA, here are the rules again:

People who are attending NCECA can participate too, but you have
to mail your mug before you leave for the conference.

Like the exchange in the Clayart room, this is a "clay thing"
exchange, not strictly mugs.

Everyone is welcome to participate -- this is about making
connections with other clayworkers, not about obtaining
high-value ceramic art. If receiving a mug from someone of
lesser skill is going to upset you, I suggest that you not
participate.

Here's what to do if you want to join in:

1. Send me your name and *mailing* (you know, like the post
office?) address (my email is: candle@intrex.net )

Non-US residents are welcome to participate. If you have a
problem with paying postage across borders, please let me know
when you sign up, and I won't pair you with an international
partner.

2. Make your mug (or teabowl or small vessel or candleholder or
whistle, or small sculpture or whatever.....) and be ready to
mail it on or a little before March 13, when NCECA starts.

Please, please, please don't sign up to participate unless you
can have a mug ready to mail *in March*, not in May, not after
graduation, or after you build your kiln, or after you find the
perfect glaze, or ......

3. On March 9/10, I'll make the matches, then send you an email
with the name and address of the person to whom you will send
your mug. The person you send a mug to will also be the person
you receive a mug from. That is, person A will send a mug *to*
person B, and will receive a mug *from* person B.

Matches will be done on a random basis, with the exception that I
will honor preferences about international /noninternational
partners, as noted above. Requests to "match me with a really
professional potter, not a newbie" will be met with scorn and
derision.

4. As soon as you get the name/address of your partner, get that
mug in the mail, so that hopefully your partner will receive it
during NCECA and have something to cheer them up.

Any questions, email me directly at candle@intrex.net.

Thanks, and let the mugs begin.

A suggestion: pack your mug as though you were sending it to a customer and
didn't want it to break.

I participated last year and the beautiful mug I received arrived in shards,
poorly packed in a shoe box, sent through the U.S. mail. I was disappointed.
The sender didn't seem impressed with my dilemma and did not replace it.

Here's a crash(pun intended) course in shipping, for those of
you who haven't done it much:

HOW TO PACK FOR SHIPPING (FOR BEGINNERS)
YOU’LL NEED:
1) 2 CARDBOARD BOXES:THE INNER ONE SHOULD BE AT LEAST
3” BIGGER THAN THE WRAPPED ITEMS ON ALL SIDES. OUTER
BOX SHOULD BE AT LEAST 3 INCHES BIGGER THAN INNER BOX ON
ALL SIDES.
2) NEWSPAPER OR BUBBLE WRAP IN WHICH TO WRAP ITEMS, AND FOR PACKING
INTO SPACES. PEANUTS AREN’T RELIABLE SINCE THEY TEND
TO ALLOW SETTLING.
3) PACKING TAPE, NOT MASKING OR SCOTCH.

WRAP ITEMS IN 5 LAYERS OF NEWSPAPER(OR 3 INCHES OF BUBBLEWRAP)
AND PUT INTO INNER BOX WITH MORE NEWSPAPER TIGHTLY PACKED IN ON
ALL SIDES. YOU SHOULDN'T BE ABLE TO FEEL THE CONTOURS OF THE POT
AFTER IT'S WRAPPED. EACH WRAPPED ITEM SHOULD BE AT LEAST 5
INCHES FROM ANY OTHER ITEM. TAPE BOX SHUT AND PUT INNER BOX
INTO OUTER BOX, TIGHTLY PACKING IN PAPER ON ALL SIDES AND
BOTTOM. TAPE ALL SEAMS. SHIP UPS IF POSSIBLE. YOU’LL NEED THE
STREET ADDRESS.

YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH ONE BOX: ALLOW ABOUT 6 INCHES OF SPACE
BETWEEN POT AND ALL SIDES OF BOX. LINE BOX ON ALL SIDES WITH
CLOSED EGG CARTONS(can be cut to fit), BOTTOMS FACING OUT. PUT
NEWSPAPER (OR BUBBLE )WRAPPED POT IN, SQUEEZE IN PAPER TO FILL
SPACES, AND TOP WITH MORE EGG CARTONS. TAPE BOX SHUT AND TAPE
ALL SEAMS.

POTS SHOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO JIGGLE OR MOVE IN ANY WAY WHEN
YOU'RE DONE...THE BOX SHOULD BE ABLE TO BE DROPPED 5 FEET ONTO CONCRETE.
DO NOT VARY FROM THIS PROCEDURE TIL YOU'VE SENT OUT 12 SHIPMENTS
WITHOUT BREAKAGE!! EXPERTS MAY CUT CORNERS WHEN EXPERIENCE
TELLS THEM WHERE! ;-) chuckle

Print this out and save. I got a hopelessly crushed mug my first
year of the mug exchange, and then gave the sender a friendly
lesson in packing....She then sent me another mug which arrived
safely. Good person.
Take Care
Jennifer

I started sending out mug partnerships last night -- as always, it takes
longer than I expected, and I ran out of steam around midnight. Worked on
it some more this morning before work, but didn't quite get done. So -- if
you haven't received your partner's name yet, just be patient -- I should
be able to finish tonight. And if you get a weird message, like one
without a partner's name in it? -- let me know -- I wasn't at my mental
finest at 5 AM.

over a week ago. i can't remember the date, but it
was before i received yours and replied. i wished i

on this end and maybe the mails are just slower in

it'll be there any day. i'm trying to learn how to
send digital pictures out and will shortly have a shot

Ginny,

Thanks so much. I didn't realize that the same person we sent our mug to
was also the one we were expecting to recieve from? I have never done this
before and I guess I just assumed (wrongly) that they were mixing them all
up and everyone would receive a mug from someone but not necessarily the
person we sent to. I like the reciprocal thing though and am happy it is
you and will be anxious to receive your work. So far nothing has showed
here but as you say it might be any day.

If you can get a good photo of my mug sent in that would be great. I tried
out digital camera here and really don't like the resolution at all and
they are always fuzzy, out of focus, or just bad. I like my regular camera
then put to disc better but I just finished a photo shoot here and won't be
taking pix again until my next kiln load and with a two week vacation
coming up from April 3-17 I will have other things on my mind and away from
clay for a short while. (Rockaway Beach, OR) destination. I am also going
to go off clayart soon so I don't pile up mail while I am away unless
someone wants to write me personally (lkouba@pop.ctctel.com)

Hi,

I recieved my exchange partners gift today. Angela
Simmons was my exchange partner this year and I am
proud to annouce I was gifted with not only a mug but
a very needed soap or lotion dispenser as well. I
believe the stay at home exchange works realy well and
we don't have to even worry about how much we exchange
since we choose to do pretty much what we want to.
Thanks Angie and I hope this finds all the stay at
home exchagers in good form and ready for next year.

I wanted to send out a special thanks to Chris Schafale for the clayart =

this off and I wanted to make sure that Chris gets the mention for a job =
extremely well done. We just made the pot but Chris organized this =
whole thing and made it happen. It gave those of us who were not able to =

Can I still get a partner for the stay at home mug exchange. I have participated in most of them since 1999. Please let me take part if you can.

Craig,

I'll need your address and whether or not you can ship internationally.
Shouldn't be a problem. In fact, I just had someone drop out so I'll
sub your name in place of hers!

I'll do it again this year. I'll start the signups in January after the
holidays. I've been keeping an eye out for NCECA posts and thinking
that I should post something about now.
