urinals and graphite

Darndest urinals I ever saw were in a church in western Nebraska where I
gave a speech. To save space, I presume, the urinals were arranged at a 90'
angle to one another, so that, unless one was alone, there was always
someone facing you - at right angles. John Wayne once said that the most
difficult problem of being a celebrity came when the guy standing next to
you at a urinal turned and said: "Say, aren't you John Wayne?" The 90 '
angle would solve that problem. But then who wants to use a urinal looking
at someone? Weirdest ones were at Maddona Inn in San Luis Obispo, Ca. Good
Lord! A whole tourist buss passed through there the one time I visited. But
I ramble.

There was an article in CM this month about using graphite as a surface
agent for ^012 pots. Looks great and easy too. But if one were to make a
bean pot fired with graphite surface, would there be a toxicity problem?
Graphite is, after all, also called "black lead." I used to lick my lead
pencils in grade school all the time. Maybe that's what is wrong.

Best,

Roger

Although graphite is indeed the "lead" in pencils, it is just a form of
carbon and therefore perfectly harmless.

Every course in Chemistry points out the striking fact that diamond and
coal are two forms of the same element.

Hey Roger; Careful about those urinals at the Madonna Inn! I was a
draftsman in the office which 'designed' the place around 1957 when I still
thought I might be an architect. I could write a book about the high level
of artifice which abounded there.......the gas pumps are pretty special,
let me tell you!
And then, I remember going to the toilet in a pizza place in
Belfort, France; where on finding the urinals, I looked up to see two
ladies standing 6 feet from me waiting to use the stalls. Yikes, Unisex WC!
I can tell you it took awhile for MY plumbing to return to working order.
The ladies never missed a beat in their animated conversation. Never did
notice anything about the urinals themselves! Laughing again in Eugene, Hank

If I remember my college chemistry correctly graphite (pencil leads) really had
no lead at all. It is simply one of the forms in which carbon can exist.
Another and popular form of carbon is the diamond.

BTW, on the atomic chart C is for carbon, Pb is for lead.

Hi All -

I hope this is not too far off the subject of beautiful urinals but I
remember when I was younger and travelling to conventions in the food
business one particular place in Portland, OR. We went to dinner at a
restaurant in downtown Portland very near the railway station. This place
had the most beautiful and ornate mens restroom you could imagine. Not only
were the urinals a work of art but it was such that they conducted regulars
tours through the MENS restroom by the LADIES.

In the restroom there was a fountain with a very buff male person standing
there with a fig leaf over his privates. Little did the ladies know that if
they lifted the fig leaf a big bell would ring in the restarant area
(obviously to gales of laughter). Invariably the fig leaf was always
lifted.

I wonder if this restaurat is still there? If so, and you are in Portland
it is a great place to have a good meal and fun.
