I need the extra strength that can be supoplied from the addition of nylon
fibres to the clay body for slab building. does anyone know of sources for
the fibre cut-offs. Unraveling a piece of cloth does not seem too
productive. thank you.

i got nylon fiber from Clay Art Center or Seattle Pottery Supply when I
lived in Seattle. I'm sure they both still have it, and it's very
inexpensive, as I remember.

Hello,
If you go to your local concrete distributor. they have bags of nylon
fiber which they add to concrete. The place were I got mine they just
gave me a bag. But, I think they usually run about eight bucks a bag.
good luck

Check with a building supply. It is used in poured concrete to increase
strength & minimize cracking of the slab.

Victor,
Try Lesley Ceramics, in Berekely, CA.. Their phone number is 510-524-7363,
also Standard Ceramic Supply C0 in Pittsburgh Pa. phone 412-276-6333,
8.30-4.30 Monday through Friday. Their price is $5.50 for a pound, less if
more is ordered.,
The following is from Leslies catalogue: "if you are hand building or
doing detailed or thin slab work the addition of about 1 ounce of nylon
fibre to l00lbs of clay will reduce the amount of cracking and warping
during the building and drying process. Nylon fibre will completely burn
out during a bisque kiln firing."
Hope this helps, Mia in unseasonably warm and dry ABQ

If you get chopped fiber from a building supply or a concrete contractor,
make absolutely sure of what you are getting. Chopped fiberglass fiber is
also used in concrete and plaster, and it is a severe skin irritant and a
carcinogen. Make sure that what you are getting is in fact chopped nylon fiber.
Best wishes -
