i'm working on a glaze testing class, does anyone have a gray glaze?
I'm looking for anything from a soft gray to steel or metallic. Tending
toward blue is fine, but the less 'color' the better.
I'm firing cone 10 reduction on a mid colored stoneware, (Zella Stone from
Highwater clay)
Thanks a lot
Sarah

Hi, Sarah.
Back when I was doing cone 10 reduction, I used to make a nice grey (a
little bit greenish grey) with iron chromate in Rhodes' Magnesia Base.
That recipe is in the text of his "Stoneware & Porcelain" book, probably
under magnesia. Maybe 1-3% iron chromate, depending on how intense you
like it.
Good luck,

Hi all,
I am looking for a matt light gray glaze cone 10 reduction. Any ideas? =
My particular problem - I used a glaze on a mountain landscape piece (El =
Capitan in Yosemite) hoping for gray, but I got a satin white instead. =
Now I need to reglaze to get matt gray. Maybe spraying some oxide(s) =
wash on top would do the trick - any suggestions along this line? All =
would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

__Don, Add a little black stain to your glaze and reglaze the mountain with
it. Mia in hot ABQ

Thanks, John, for the suggestion. So far I've only had one or two others.
Hope you're doing well. The kiln's still going strong.

Don,
Hi. Long time no see.
I don't know the requirements for functionality......... so this suggestion
may be useless.
Maybe try a grey overglaze enamel / china paint????? Fire it over the
existing glaze. Maybe underfire it a tad to matt it.... or mix in a little
alumina hydrate or kaolin to matt it. Test first .
Best,

Donald,
others with more knowledge might jump in here but I beleive that magnesium
brings out a dark grey colour in glazes with iron oxides in them.
