Anji--I'm a potter living near Sterling on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska.
We're 25 minutes south of Anchorage by air or 3 hours south by road. There
is an active potters guild centered in Kenai, Alaska. Anchorage also has an
active (and larger) guild.
I'd be glad to help your friend if they're heading this way. My e-mail is:
holloway@ptialaska.net.

My daughter is preparing to return to
Alaska this coming Thursday. She
has lived in Sitka on Baranoff Island
for 4 years. Sitka is a small town,
the only town on the island. They
do have an airport, on a neighboring
island connected by a large bridge.
I visited her in May of 1999. There
are several art galleries and shops
that sell pottery, etc.. I talked to
one of the local artist and gallery
owners. She told me that there
were several 2 D artist in Sitka
but no potters. Her name is
Kaye McCarty. She begged me
to move there, saying they really
needed a local potter.
Every piece of pottery or
sculpture I looked at came from
somewhere else.
The local college, Sheldon
Jackson does have a ceramic
studio and offers classes. But
the way she talked, none of
the students continue in
ceramics once out of school.
Sitka is one of
the stops the cruise ships make
along the inside passage. Except
Sitka is actually on the outside,
facing the Pacific Ocean.
The area has been greatly influenced
by Russia, since it was owned by
Russia and is the place that
the Russians handed over Alaska to
the Americans.
The predominate Native American tribe
there is Tlinget.
Check out the Sitka site on the
Internet. The whole place
reminded me of the TV show
Northern Exposure.
And the people there are some
of the friendliest I have ever met.
Do I sound like a travel guide?

my daughters departure) :(

Hi, Sheron,
I envy your daughter, I don't envy you. I know you will miss her, but I know
how she must feel about Sitka.
I lived in Alaska for 30 years, and when I first went there I lived in
Wrangell, on Wrangell Island, just south of Sitka. Taught school.
Southeast, there is really no place like it. I went to Southeast Alaska back
when there were no airports, and all the air service was float planes and
seaplanes. Ellis Airlines was the main provider of air service, so it has
been a long time ago.
As for Sitka itself, I never got to stay there for any length of time. Was
always to busy, but who knows. One of my ambitions is is to take my VW
camper bus and travel to the cities of Southeast on the ferry system, and
spend some time in each town along the way.
One day.
Have a good day.
