pemco frit substitution?

updated wed 9 feb 00

I am considering trying a new clear base glaze that I found in Chappell's
book. I'm seeking a good glossy base that does not contain Gerstley Borate.

The glaze I'm considering calls for Pemco Frit #626. Chappell says Hommel
frit #400 can be substituted. None of my supply catalogs list either of
these frits. Is there anything else I can substitute?

Thanks.

Sue,
Try Ferro #3289 as a direct substitute. For more substitutions try my
homepage at :http://home.earthlink.net/~fgaydos/frits.html

Hi Sue,

Looking through the Matrix materials databases I find that Ferro Frit 3289
is an almost exact substitute for Pemco Frit #626. This frit has only BaO
with KNO in its flux group which makes it rather unusual and hard to match.

You can make up a composite substitution with the following:

Ferro 3227 31.8
Barium Carb 33.39 (warning!!!)
Silica 34.82

This combination is a little low on B2O3 but otherwise satisfies the
chemical analysis for Pemco 626.

You will find the analisis of Ferro 3289 and Ferro 3227 in the Materials
Database on the Matrix website.
