I am looking for low-fire, Cone 06-04 crystalline glazes. All I have been
able to find are high fire glazes. There is supposedly an article in
December 1975's 'Ceramics Monthly' containing several cone 06 recipes. Does
anyone have this article, or know of any other low-fire recipes?
Thank you,
Jennifer Marchman

Jennifer- Chapell's book has only one that doesn't have a lead frit.
SEG-34 cone 05
raw alkaline , semi opaque, rust brown
BORAX 38.8
PEMCO #626 2.4
BORIC ACID 2.8
KAOLIN 1.5
SILICA 39.5
RED IRON OX 15
-----------------------------
100
ADD : 2% BENTONITE
AND 1 TSP. CMC
pemco 626 is a barium silicate frit
ferro 3289 seems to be very similar in those two ingredients
iron is integral to this glaze do not substitute, he says it produces a rust
colored surface and tan to off white crystals.
Apply thickness of a dime at the top and thinner towards the base to keep it
off the shelves.
He also recomends ball milling and using immediately or mix only what you
are going to use as it lumps badly when stored wet.

OOPS! I forgot to put the firing schedule.
It says: Fire to cone 05, cool quickly to cone 04 to two or three hours
(HUH?)
then cool slowly to 100 degrees F
Must have been a typo, try letting it cool about 50 degrees (about ^ 06)
then holding it for tree or four hours at that temp. then cool slowly. You
are well off if you have an electronic controller.

Dear Jennifer,
There is indeed an article on crystalline glazes in the December l975
Ceramics Monthly, pages 21 to 26 by David Snair. However the glaze recipies
are for cone 9 only. Sorry to disappoint you. Mia in warm and sunny ABQ

Jennifer, Herbert H Sanders in his Glazes for special effects does have
recipes for crystalline glazes in the cone 0l0 range which all contain red
lead. He has recipes for Aventurine glazes cone 06 again with leaded frits.
You might find this book at your local library.Leslie Ceramics in Berkely
used to have ready mixed aventurine glazes. Hope this helps, Mia in ABQ

Jennifer :
There are a few formulas in James Chappell's book "The Potter's Complete
Book of Clay and Glazes" 1991 Edition. I have never tried them as they are
either raw glazes ( soluble fluxes) or lead based.
