I would like to build a Minnesota Flat Top Car Kiln this spring . I have
read Nil's book "The Art of Firing" , but I would like some sound advice
on the construction of it and a set of plans to go by with details , etc.
.Most of my work is Sculpture, but I have developed a passion for
porcelain. I would like to reduction fire to cone 10 . Any suggestions ,
hints or input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank's ,
Sally

Your interest in the MFT is very much appreciated. I have recently
corrected some errors in the old plans and re-written the instructions for
better clarity-I hope. A full description and list of materials is
included.
Mainly, though, the big change is a wider door opening (9") and a design
for the flat roof that improves the viability. It involves a new
configuration using 3" straights (3x4-1/2x9). Makes for fewer joints and
eliminates the tendency for the side rows to bow outward. It came to me in
a dream!?
The plans include a description, drawings and photos of the neat, little
Oregon Flat Top (OFT). Not as completely described, but enough information
to build one. The price is $20 US which includes postage in US and
Canada.
To order send me (Nils Lou) a check or Money Order in US funds to:
PO Box 151
Willamina, OR 97396

Hola, Sally=21

I can't direct you to detailed plans for your MFT, but I would suggest =
checking
out some helpful pic's at: http://www.linfield.edu/=7Enlou/ ...if you =
haven't
done so already. Also, if you send Nils Lou =2420.00 he will send you the =
most
recent plan updates on the MFT. Other than that it's like playing with
blocks.....rather straight forward. I have helped construct others' and it =
was
a breeze. Don't get me wrong. I did find it necessary to cuss here and =
there
and breaking a sweat was inevitable, but no major stumbles were met. I hope=
to
start mine in a few weeks.

Good luck, Sally=21

Sally,
You should get the plans from Nils Lou for that kiln. It only costs $20 and
is money well spent. I found it equally helpful to download the 40 pictures
available online of the construction of a MFT. Email me if you can't find
them and i will look up that address. Also, I would be happy to discuss any
questions you might have. : ) Tonya

p.s. i just built mine a few months ago.
