Way back in the murky depths of my mind, I seem to recall reading/hearing =
that
zinc oxide could be used as a direct substitute for barium carb., if the
percentage of the glaze batch was not very high. If correct, would anyone
have any further info. on this? Many thanks.

Nope - just ran the problem through my calculator - To replace 5% barium
you would need 2% zinc oxide.

If you try that in a reduction glaze it would be just like taking out the
barium cause the zinc will leave in a reduction firing and have no fluxing
effect.

To replace 5% barium use 2.5% whiting or 3.5 strontium for reduction glazes.
