The thought of sprinkling oxide or stain does not appeal to me unless I =
wanted a
speckled look.. Why not mix the oxide with a slip of the porcelain body and =
put
through a glaze sieve...then mix in enough of the powdered body to give a =
thick
slurry...Stiffen this on a plaster bat until near the texture of the body =
clay
and wedge in. This should give an even colour with minimum effort.

I'll start by saying I read an article in vegetarian times about
staining eggs with cut flowers and onion skins and it got me thinking.
My question is whether or not it would work to stain fully fired
porcelain that has not been glazed?

The process was explained as (short version) placing cut flowers
against an egg wrap it up in onion skin (red or yellow) and then in a
piece of cloth tie it closed and boil for 12 minutes. When done polish
with vegetable oil and look at the results.

My brain keeps churning on this and although I haven't tried it yet I
do plan on it. I figure I could seal the stain in the clay by after
letting it dry lacquer it or put a coat of clear varnish on it. I do
have a couple of concerns though.

1) Will the clay body be porous enough to let a stain occur with the
boiling method? Should I let the flowers just be held against the body
with the onion skins and let time do the work?

2) Is mold going to be a problem with these? I would hate to get
something spectacular done and then 2 weeks later have it obscured by
mold.

Thanks for any input.
