Hi Clayarters,
We will be visiting the Santa Fe area from 3/2 to 3/7. Does anyone have any
"must see" ideas for the area? I want to see as much "clay" as possible as
well as the area attractions......not just the commercial stuff the tour
guides list.

Any suggestions welcome.

Dear Bobbi,

I was in Sante Fe last winter, and found a museum on the outskirts of town
featuring the local black terra sig. pottery-past and present. There was a
spectacular large vessel in there done by Maria Martinez, and her
grandson(maybe) as well as ancient anisazi potsherds and the like. It is
worth a look or two, i think it might be in the tourbooks, not sure though.
For me, the desert south of Sante Fe and Bandelier national monument were the
real attractions, didn't so much as enter a gallery ::shrug:: Maybe i was
pottery-ed out at the time.....

Bobbi,

If you are going to br in the area for that long, you might want to drop
down to the Albuquerque area and the surrounding pueblos. It's only
about 1 1/2 hours drive from Santa Fe. And Taos is about as far to the
north west. I personally prefer to go to the pueblos and see the pottery
being made and fired.

In Santa Fe the Museum of New Mexico www.nmculture.org
Have lunch at the LaFonda hotel, walk the square, plenty of beautiful
galleries. Inn of Loretto with the famous staircase. Visit Chimayo between
Santa Fe and Espanola, drive through Nambe to get there, visit Ortega
Weavers, eat at the Coyote Cafe, in Santa Fe. If you go to Chimayo the
Restaurante Rancho de Chimayo is great.
March 22-27 is The Bead Expo 2000 at Santa Fe's Sweeny Center
Bandelier National Monument on the road to Los Alamos.
Enjoy blue sky, sensational sunsets.

If you're planning on tooling around New Mexico in general, don't miss
the pottery of Los Mimbres. Although it's found in several noteworthy
museums, I personally was most influenced by their pots in the smaller
museum in Demming, New Mexico. The pots are so detailed, the artistry is
so simple yet elaborate in their geometric and precise decorations, and
the humor of the potters so readily apparent... that it's easy to be
transported to the time of the Los Mimbres and vividly visualize what
the potter's mood might have been as he created such incredible works.
Many of the decorations reminded me of Escher's work which displays a
similar humor. I'm sure Escher and Los Mimbres would have appreciated
one another.

In the Mojave just in from the studio where bisque is firing, mentee's
dozen or more drying slab-formed Indian figures offer elegant contrast
to the most inelegant toilet paper rolls they lean against for needed
support, and both the Brent and the Shimpo have my larger-than-usual
pots spinning slowly as the rain ping-pings on the roof......wonder what
I'd have been doing in retirement without the advent of clay and art
into my life?

By all means stop in at Santa Fe Clay and see what they have going on. They
have a gallery, workshops, studios, etc. They can direct you to many local
attractions. If you have the time, give Jeff Lawrence a call at SunDagger
Design in Espanola. That is 25 miles north of Santa Fe. His place is right on
the highway and he has some really interesting stuff going on.

Enjoy your visit.

Dear Marcia,
There are many interesting things to see in Santa Fe which will take more
than a couple of days to do them justice. I will list things that might be
of interest to potters:
Laboratory of Anthropology/Museum of Indian Arts and Culture. at 710 Camino
Lejo, next door is the Museum of International Folk art. If you decide to
go to see this fun place attach yourself to a guide who is giving a tour.
It is the difference between seeing a lot of stuff and understanding what
you see.
Canyon Road is gallery road. Some galleries are of no interest -tourist
stuff, but many have wonderful pottery.Since parking is impossible, just go
down one side, peek into each gallery and go into those that have pots Do
the same ono othe other side.On the plaza there are some very good
galleries for Indian pottery. Occasionally Pueblo Indians sell their ware
in front of the Palace of govenors. However lately the sellers have mainly
peddled jewelry. A must see is the Allan Houser Gallery of his sculpture in
stone and bronze -50 East San Francisco Street just off the Plaza. Another
must see is the foundry off Bishops Lodge Road- Shidoni foundry.
Wonderful place with bronze sculptures scattered on their grounds which are
made by them- or rather cast by them .
At your hotel or motel you will find a free Collectors Guide which ought to
help you decide what to see and where to go. Mia in ABQ

Bobbi,

Santa Fe Clay is a must see--large warehouse bldg. housing a pottery supply
shop,
workshop facilities, studio space for rent, classes. Avra and Trish run the
place--really nice people. Nearby is Jenny Lind Pottery--beautiful pottery
dishes; and also across the street and down aways a different Santa Fe Clay
which is a shop full of pottery; and close by is Paseo Pottery. Right near
all of this is Tomasitto's, a good place to eat. Have fun.
