Very good point. They were using cerussite which is lead carbonate. There
even was a famous actress at that time that died from the lead makeup. But
there are other routes of entry when you put the stuff on your face in a
powdery form. I'm sure there was inhalation and ingestion occurring as well.

I just finished my 7th book which is on theatrical/film/TV industry hazards
and there is a big chapter on makeup. Did you know that there are still lead
and even mercury cosmetics from foreign sources, available and/or sold here
in the US, that have been responsible for poisonings? There is an ancient
traditional eye makeup called "kohl" made from lead sulfide and antimony
sulfide that was the cause of high blood lead levels in young children on the
East Coast among middle Eastern immigrants. It is their custom to use this
makeup on children. And there are two mercury skin creams from Mexico that
are used/sold mostly in the Southwest that have been documented to have
poisoned over 100 people by skin absorption. We never learn.
