I have searched my books and the archives and cannot find the answer so I
suspect I may be asking the wrong question.
I am trying a new Frit based clear recipe and I think I need a specific
gravity reading for using it in a sprayer. Visiually it looks ridiculously
thin, then when it fires it looks like it was too thick.Maybe I should just
put food coloring into it so I can see it better??
Here's the recipe :
Clear Glaze 04-9
Frit 3124 80
Kaolin 10
Flint 10
Bentonite 2
Thanks in advance for answering what may be a dumb question !!

Chris,
Not sure that I can help, but I do have an observation and question.
I would have thought that a glaze with 80% of any frit would not need as
much water added as many other glaze mixes which do not contain a frit.
Also I imagine it would settle quite quickly, hence the addition of
bentonite to help suspension. From my experience with spraying I would
not have thought that this would present a problem. I find that it is
important to have a definite routine for spraying according to the glaze
and desired result. By routine I mean the number of coats I spray. If
you are after a clear shiny glaze and the result looks 'too thick' then
spray less. If your 'too thick' could be 'looks not quite smoothed out'
then fire higher or longer or both.
Always difficult to comment without being able to share sight of the
pieces, but I hope this may be of some help.
