estrin kiln flaking iron

I have a 20yr old square 6 cu. ft.cone 10 Estrin Kiln that is still in good
shape, except that the metal rim of the lid holding the soft brick in place
is flaking annoying iron chips all over my white glazes. I've tried packing
the area with kayo wool, and kiln cement --also fibre putty. These little
flakes work their way around everything. Someone suggested putting a
piece of fibre-board over the top before putting the lid down, however, the
lid soft brick is raised 1/2 inch in the center for a tight fit , which
means the lid wouldn't fit flush with the fibre board. Any other
suggestions? Thanks.

If not then any one of a hundred metal shops around Vancouver will sell you
a proper length of light S/S 4"Wide.. The back hinge can be rivetted in
place as well as the cover prop fitting. Probably any 'tinknocker could do
the job at a reasonable cost. I would leave the cover in place while doing
the work, first shielding the interior of the kiln with heavy paper. Believe
it would be advantageous to cut a piece if Kaowool/Fibrefrax,paper to add
between the bricks and the new metal. I have used a piece of heavy guage
fencewire and a turnbuckle as a clamp to hold the new S/S strap, in place.
Has worked fine for over two years with a bit of tightening now and again.

I had a square Amaco with the same problem and had a fellow "REPAIR " it when
he replaced some brick and new elements but same thing happened again and he
was gone and that was pre CLAYART, so I wound up giving it to a fellow who
was going to see if he could fix it. I hope you have good luck as it was very
annoying and ruined even bisque, not to mention glazes. I will be interested
in hearing the solution.
