I had to share with all of you my excitement about the Triangle
Potters Guild Empty Bowls event, which was held in Raleigh
yesterday. I first heard about Empty Bowls on Clayart a couple of
years ago, and finally this fall got in a position where I could make
it happen in our local guild (it helps that I'm the newsletter writer....)
Anyway, after months of planning, it finally happened.
We had at least 270 bowls, from probably 20-30 potters, and raised
over $3000! The money will be divided between the Food Bank of
NC and other hunger-fighting groups. The response from the public
has been great. I'd encourage any local potters organization to do
one of these -- it really got people involved and made members feel
good about the guild. If anyone is contemplating doing this, I'd be
happy to share details of our experience -- just email me off-list.
Now for a slightly off-the-wall request, and a more serious
suggestion. First the request -- we actually have another Empty
Bowls event scheduled for March 8 (long story, this happened very
late in the process), and we have only about 15 or 20 bowls left.
I'm putting the appeal back out the the potters guild, but it occurred
to me to ask all of you, too. So, if anyone out there in cyber-land
has a soup bowl or two to spare, and wants to ship it to NC before
March 8, that would be grand. Anything goes as long as it is
functional and food-safe. This is your chance to find a home for all
those orphans lurking on your shelves. Send them to me at:

OK, now here's the more sensible suggestion. Has an Empty
Bowls event ever been done in conjunction with NCECA??
Wouldn't it be great to do a Clayart Empty Bowls in Charlotte next
year?? I realize that they already have the cup sale, but I don't
think this would interfere. Maybe we could commandeer a large
church somewhere near the conference site, use their kitchen and
fellowship hall, etc. Tell me what you think, all of you folks who
have been involved with NCECA for years. I'm volunteering to help
get it done, if it's feasible. (I'm about 3 hours from Charlotte)

Chris, I would like to hear more about this from you and others. Our Empty
Bowl event comes up on 8 March too. I've been pushed into this tail over head
about a month ago. We had a successful clay day where a group of potters made
pieces and the public watched and learned more about the throwing process. We
done this on very short notice and just when the hackers got on the net
services. Any suggestions will be welcome. We will definitely do this again.
It is once a year that potters can come to a stand still and do charity work
on an organized way. We added publicity to it from which potters can always
benefit.
Did you work with any sponsorships for clay and glazes. How did you organize
it?
Antoinette.

Has this Empty Bowl idea been launched in the UK?
If not, why not?
What are the details that would be appropriate?
I am particularly interested in putting it to the Quaker Peace and Service
part of our Quaker Yearly Meeting.
Perhaps there are other Quaker potters who would take part?

Martin, In New Mexico there are several cities that have the empty bowl
project. Some months before the project date, potters are asked to
contribute their bowls .. In Albuquerque the local clay company will
accept contributions of bowls, which facilitates getting bowls together in
one place. Local restaurants supply soup and bread. For a $10 donation
people select a bowl of their choice and enjoy a soup lunch and keep the
bowl. Needless to say only functional bowls are filled with soup. Plastic
bowls are provided for those bowls that cannot be eaten from. There is
also a silent auction of special bowls. The New Mexico Potters association
and Project Share ( a local charity which serves meals five days a week to
hungry adults and children) sponsors this fund raiser.Several thousand
dollars are raised for this worthy cause.

Martin,
I don't know if Empty Bowls has been done in the UK. Probably
just waiting for someone like you to get the ball rolling.
I have an Empty Bowls page on my website (address below). You
can also get a packet of information about Empty Bowls by writing
to the Imagine/RENDER Group. Their address and email are
posted on my website.
