clayart slide workshop update

updated mon 13 mar 00

Russel Fouts on wed 1 mar 00

I was wrong, this thing IS going to happen. I'm excited. We just need to
figure out which evening would be best and who wants to participate.

Marcia Selsor and Dianne Kirwin have graciously offered the use of their
projectors and extra, empty trays and screens. If we get a lot of people, we
might need another(?). We could use some extension cords, etc. Louis
recemmended NOT going to the Hotel's AV
department. Seems they're "territorial".

Many people have said they'd be interested in participating and I've had a
lot of good input from others.

Also Ruth Butler, editor of CM contacted me to ask if she could contribute
her "2 cents" regarding slides for publication. I think that would be great.

Basically, my plan is to run it like a jury's slide viewing. The idea would
be to give people the experience of seeing their slides in a jurying
situation so they could see what the jury sees when they review slides. I've
never participated in a jury so I'm only guessing but have read a bit
written by people who've been on juries.

It would also be an opportunity to see your slides, objectivly in
relationship to the others and how they might appear to a jury. It would
also be a good place to and pick up some tips.

People should bring 3 or 4 slides, we load them up in the trays and run
them, each slide gets a few seconds, no comments, just run through them,
1,2,3,4,5...... Afterwards anyone who wanted to discuss the slides could
stay and do so. Anyone who didn't, could take their slides and go (or leave
them and collect them later).

Ruth's contribution gave me the idea that maybe we could get some kind of
informal panel together; someone with jury experience, professional craft
photographer, excellent amateur photographer (John Hesselberth wrote a good
article), etc. I'm looking for your input here. Volunteers?

If you want to participate:

- Send an OFF LIST email to Russel.Fouts@skynet.be Put "Clayart Slide
Workshop Participant" in the subject. I won't be able to check Clayart after
the 11th but will probably have access to my email. If I miss any one, see
me at NCECA. See me anyway, just in case.
- If you want to show slides, label your slides with your name and address.
Put a red dot in the upper right hand corner (the picture is right-side up).
Bring your slides to the Clayart room on the day of the workshop an hour
before it's due to start.
- You are welcome to participate even if you don't have slides. Just let us
know so we have an idea of how many people we have to set up for.
- We'll need some volunteers to help set up the projectors and the room and
reset.
- Please let me know if I've forgotten anything.
- We will let you know as soon as we know the date and time. Depending on
when we know, it will be announced on Clayart, or in the Clayart room or on
the Notices Bulletin Board (there always is one).

Now let's hear from you.

For those of you who joined this thread late, I've included the original
post below:
>> The recent discussion about slide quality, do-it-yourself, get someone
professional to do it, slides on CD, slides from digital images, etc, etc,
etc has reminded me that I've wanted to organise an unofficial, on-the-side
"Slides" session at NCECA. We could steal some slide projectors and use the
clayart room one evening or take over one of the small slide rooms for the
evening, whatever. Object: I've been taking my own slides for a few years
now. I think they're good but don't have much to compare them against and
have never had them critqued. I think there may be some others in this
situation. I just met Kieth Chervenak's friend Sandy Hadden-Miller and she
was describing an evening where they did something similar. One thing they
did was just put all the slides in the projectors and just ran through them
at the same speed that a jury would look at them. It sounded really
objective and she said that it really made it clear where her self-done
slides stood in the bunch. We could simply do that. It'd be quick,
objective, just run through the slides, no comment from anybody, you make up
your own mind. Walk an evening in the jury's shoes. For those that wanted
more, we could actually talk about technique, hints, etc. I'd be willing to
try to organise it. Any takers? <<
