wax + glaze

Does anyone use glaze mixed with wax - over glaze - to resist another coat.
A potter has asked me to help with finding a replacement wax. His other
supply - which worked well - is no longer available.

Reply directly to me if you wish - thanks - RR

Ron a potter friend dose this all the time. He uses the wax you can get
from aftosa in Ca. 1-800-231-0397 The way this potter dose it is he scraps
the inside of his glaze buckets to get off the dry glaze and the he adds
that to the wax. It seems like a good way to do it. It works well for Him
Chris.

woun't resist well when mixed with glaze - can you tell me the brand name
of that wax?

Hi Ron There is on brand name other then their own Aftosa. I think they may
make it there self. they do say they do ship to Canada weather permitting .
I guess that means they won't ship if its frizzing because wax will freeze.
Try WWW.aftosa.com Chris.

Ron,
I've always used hot wax resist, because I've never been happy with the
resisting qualities of commercial emulsified cold wax. My current mix is
about 50% parafin wax, and 50% "Liquid Parafin" from Lamplighter Farms. I
heat this mix in a plug in type soup hotpot, and dip my wax brush in it
for brushwork over bisqueware, and between layers of glaze for a masking
effect. Resisting qualities are excellant. I use it in a well vented
workspace, of course. I haven't tried it, but I suspect that this method
would produce good results with dry glaze added into it. If the mix seems
too thick, or gobby, simply add a little more Liquid Parafin (or more
heat). If it seems too thin, and doesn't resist well enough, simply add a
little more wax (or less heat, esp. if excessive smoke). I've used
kerosene instead of the lamp oil in the past, and it works great, but I'm
concerned about the fumes, and possible health risks associated, and like
to keep them at the minimal level possible. Perhaps there are even
better/safer materials which would work in hot wax resist. David
